General information

There is no current on-call/ weekend/ public holiday laboratory service for Virology. For any clinical advice during these times, please contact the on-call Clinical Microbiologist via switchboard.

All virology/microbiological serology work is done at RSCH. Samples originating at PRH should be forwarded to pathology reception at PRH and the microbiology lab will arrange transport to virology at RSCH.

Please provide all relevant clinical details including date of onset, date of exposure, date of LMP, EDD, occupational, vaccination, and travel history, as appropriate.

Please use the test index or search function at the top of the page for information on individual tests. Quoted turnaround times are the time from receipt of specimen into the laboratory to 90% of reports leaving the laboratory. Stated times are based on normal working hours, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory bank and public holidays.

From July 2024 systems will be introduced in ICE to limit inappropriate repeat testing according to the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines (G147 National Minimum Retesting Intervals in Pathology, March 2021).
