Red cells

  • Must be started within 30 minutes of removal from Issue Fridge.
  • Must go through blood giving set (has a filter). Ideally through a pump but not necessary.
  • Except in emergency situations infusion time is 1½ hours – 4 hours.

Fresh frozen plasma

  • Must be started within 30 minutes of removal from Issue Fridge.
  • Must go through blood giving set (has a filter).
  • Infusion time is 30 minutes per bag. All units must be given within 4 hours of defrosting.

Cryoprecipitate

  • Must be commenced as soon as possible.
  • Must go through blood giving set (has a filter).
  • Infusion time is stat.

Platelets

  • Must be commenced as soon as possible after removal from the incubator.
  • Must go through blood giving set (has a filter).
  • Maximum infusion time is 30 minutes.

rV11a

  • Bolus intravenous injection, administration rate of 2-5 mins. Should be Anaesthetist.

Octaplex

  • Bolus intravenous injection. All equipment needed to reconstitute is supplied.
  • Administration rate is 2-3 mL/minute.

Haemate P

  • Bolus intravenous injection. All equipment needed to reconstitute is supplied.
  • Administration rate must not exceed 4 mL/minute.

Benefix

  • Bolus intravenous injection over several minutes. All equipment needed to reconstitute is supplied.

Feiba

  • Bolus intravenous injection. All equipment needed to reconstitute is supplied.
  • Administration rate is 2 iu/kg/minute

e.g. Patient weighs 70 kg and requires 2000 iu.

140 iu = 1 minute
2000 iu = 14½ minutes

 Factor XI

  • Bolus intravenous injection administered over several minutes (approx 5 mins).

Advate

  • Bolus intravenous injection. All equipment needed to reconstitute is supplied. 
  • Administration rate is no more than 10 mL/minute.
