Samples required

EDTA blood (purple cap/ yellow cap ring, 4 mL tube), plus

clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube) for paired creatinine and phosphate.

Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

If the patient has renal impairment or hyperparathyroidism the sample must be delivered to the lab immediately for separation and freezing of plasma.

To ensure that the appropriate version of this test is done at the referral laboratory the following clinical details MUST be provided:

  • Does the patient have renal impairment?
  • Does the patient have hyperparathyroidism? Please send additional sample for PTH if necessary.

Test indications

Investigation of unexplained low serum phosphate. Biochemical marker for the phosphate-wasting condition oncogenic osteomalacia and hypophosphataemia.

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 28 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
