Samples required

EDTA blood (purple cap/ yellow cap ring, 4 mL tube), and

clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube) for simultaneous albumin and calcium.

Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Avoid haemolysis.

Test indications

Investigation of calcium abnormalities. Please only request if hyper or hypocalcaemia (adjusted) has been confirmed, or if there is a specific indication (e.g. ?tertiary hyperparathyroidism).

Test information

Assay measures intact hormone.

Factors affecting test performance/ results

Haemolysed samples are unsuitable.

In rare cases, interference due to extremely high titres of antibodies to analyte-specific antibodies, streptavidin or ruthenium can occur.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.

1.83 - 7.85 pmol/L
