Samples required

3 x trisodium citrate blood (blue cap, 3.5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube) if UK TTP Registry required.

Mix samples immediately by gentle inversion and store at room temperature. Samples must reach the laboratory as soon as possible after being taken - centrifugation and separation within 4 hours of being taken is required.

All requests MUST be accompanied by a completed copy of the UCLH request form, signed by the requesting clinician and naming the Consultant Haematologist spoken to.

Turnaround time

Referral laboratory quotes turnaround time as 2 weeks for ADAMTS13 activity, and 3 weeks for ADAMTS13 antibody assay, although in practice may be quicker.
