Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Test indications

This test is used to aid in the diagnosis of autoimmune bullous skin disease (bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris), particularly when direct immunofluorescence on skin biopsy is unavailable.

Reference range

Reported as positive or negative for each of two fields: basement membrane antibodies (positive results associated with bullous pemphigoid) and intracellular cement antibodies (positive results associated with pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceous).
