Test indications

Diagnosing latent TB infection as well as TB disease.

Test information

Referred to Oxford Diagnostic Lab, T.Spot service.

This is a time critical sample. Samples must be received in the laboratory promptly following collection. The collection date and time of the sample must be accurately completed on the request form. Samples received without this information will be rejected. 

Samples required

 Lithium heparin blood (green cap, 6 mL tube), or  trisodium citrate tube (blue cap, 3.5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Required sample volumes:

Age 10 years and over: 6 mL

2 - 10 years: 4 mL

under 2 years: 2 mL

Store at room temperature (NOT refrigerated). Samples need to be received in the lab at RSCH no later than 4pm Monday – Friday.

If sending from PRH Monday to Thursday: Samples need to be received in the lab at PRH no later than 14:30 to meet the 15:00 courier to RSCH. Friday only: samples need to be received in the lab at PRH no later than 12:30 to ensure samples reach RSCH in time for last courier run to external testing laboratory.

For Bank Holidays: only send samples up to 3 days before bank holidays as external laboratory does not test over this period. Samples can be sent the day after any bank holiday.

Heparin tubes are available from Microbiology Reception.

Turnaround time

Usually 48hrs after the sample is received at the referral laboratory.
