Samples required

EDTA blood (purple cap/ black cap ring, 4 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Samples from infants and children (minimum 0.5 mL) should be accompanied by a 1 mL sample from the affected parent to act as a control.

Only available after prior arrangement with haematology staff.

Analysis must be carried out within 48h therefore samples must be sent Monday-Wednesday only.

Test indications

Diagnosis of red cell membrane disorders, principally hereditary spherocytosis.

If arranged urgently, results available within 24 hours of sample receipt at referral laboratory. Final report within 14 days.
