Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Bring to lab immediately on ice (sample must be spun, separated and frozen within two hours of being drawn).

Test indications

Investigation of C1 inhibitor deficiency.

C4 is measured on all C1 inhibitor requests. Sample will only be referred for C1 inhibitor if C4 is less than 0.2 g/L.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 3 days for antigenic and 14 days for functional assay, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
