Manganese (blood)

Referred to Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services, Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Portsmouth Road, Frimley, Surrey GU16 7UJ

Alternative names, keywords

Mn

Samples required

Sodium heparin blood (navy blue cap, 6 mL tube).

EDTA blood (purple cap/ yellow cap ring, 4 mL tube) is accepted however contamination cannot be excluded. An empty tube from the same lot can be sent to check for tube contamination.

Paediatric navy top tubes are not available - please use EDTA tube and send an empty tube from the same lot to check for tube contamination.

Ensure the blood mixes thoroughly with the anticoagulant in the tube - clotted samples cannot be analysed.

Special sampling precautions are required to minimise contamination if querying deficiency - ideally bleed patients from indwelling plastic cannula, discarding first 5 mL blood.

Otherwise the second sample (EDTA tube) should be identified for this assay. The first draw is used to wash out traces of metals from the steel needle and can be used for other assays e.g. FBC.
