Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Test indications

For investigation of ambiguous genitalia in neonates and young children, and suspected 5-alpha-reductase deficiency.

Rarely indicated. Blood concentration does not reflect tissue concentration due to peripheral tissue conversion.

Reference range

Male: 0.32 - 1.64 nmol/L
Female: <0.6 nmol/L
Pre-pubertal children: <0.27 nmol/L

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 21 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
