Samples required

 0.5 mL CSF in fluoride oxalate (grey cap, 2 mL tube).

2nd sample from lumbar puncture requested - please refer to the CSF collection page.

Can be done on the same sample as CSF lactate.

Please send paired fluoride oxalate blood.

No specific interferences noted.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.

Reference range

adult: 2.2 - 3.9 mmol/L
child: 3.3 - 4.4 mmol/L

CSF glucose should be approximately 60 % of the concurrent plasma concentration.
