Cholinesterase (scoline apnoea)

Alternative names, keywords

Pseudocholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, suxamethonium / succinylcholine apnoea,  cholinesterase phenotype, dibucaine number, fluoride number, Ro 02-0683 number.

Samples required

● Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Avoid sampling after recent blood transfusion, do not collect during scoline apnoea.

Test indications

For scoline apnoea and family studies of patients with cholinesterase deficiency. Cholinesterase deficiency will result in prolonged paralysis after the use of muscle relaxants for operative surgery.

For organophosporous exposure request cholinesterase (OP exposure). Note sample requirements are different.

Reference range

Cholinesterase activity 650 - 1450 U/L

Remember to test the first degree relatives of those affected - especially siblings.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 10 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
