Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube).

Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples but avoid gel tubes -  use red cap tube.

Test indications

Primarily offered to monitor the treatment of CAH.

Often a urinary steroid profile is a more useful test first.

Reference range

Pre-pubertal (0.5 - 9 years): < 0.8 nmol/L
Post-pubertal: 2 - 5.4 nmol/L

Reference range during puberty depends on pubertal stage.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 10 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
