Trimethylaminuria

Referred to Department of Clinical Chemistry and Newborn Screening, Sheffield Children's Hospital, Western Bank, Sheffield S10 2TH

Alternative names, keywords

Trimethylamine, fish odour syndrome.

Samples required

24h urine collection in acidified container is preferred, but a fresh random sample (10 mL requested) is accepted.

Instructions for 24h urine collection available here or on UHSussex public site.

It is recommended that before and/or during the collection the patient eats some choline-rich foods (e.g. eggs, liver, kidney, peas, beans, peanuts, soy products, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower). If trimethylaminuria is present then this will make the symptoms worse and the test results much clearer.

Test indications

Investigation of suspected fish odour syndrome.
