Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Only a pre dose sample is required.

Staph. aureus - pre-dose:

Skin and soft tissue infection

15 - 30 but < 60 mg/L

Bone and joint

20 - 40 but < 60 mg/L

Infective endocarditis

30 - 40 but < 60 mg/L

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) on 25 mg/kg 3x per week

20 - 30 mg/L

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of less than 2 working days*, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.

*samples are analysed on day of receipt if before 3pm, Monday to Friday.
