Factors affecting test performance/ results |
Pseudohyponatremia may be seen with lipaemic specimens as a result of fluid displacement. Altered protein‑/lipid levels may falsely shift sodium results into the opposite direction; i.e. elevated protein level causing pseudohyponatraemia, decreased protein level causing pseudohypernatraemia. Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings. |
