Factors affecting test performance/ results |
Haemolysis releases phosphatases and organic phosphates from red cells, leading to an increase in inorganic phosphates. Phospholipids contained in liposomal drug formulations (e.g. AmBisome) may be hydrolysed in the test due to the acidic reaction pH and thus lead to elevated phosphate results. In very rare cases, gammopathy, in particular type IgM (Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia), may cause unreliable results. Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings. |
