Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Avoid haemolysis.

Samples received more than 8 hours after venepuncture are unsuitable for analysis.

Test indications

Test information

CSF LDH is not routinely offered.

For pleural fluid LDH see pleural fluid biochemistry.

Factors affecting test performance/ results

Avoid haemolysis. Contamination with erythrocytes will elevate results due to the high LDH activity in erythrocytes. The level of interference may be variable depending on the LDH content in the lysed erythrocytes.

In very rare cases, gammopathy, in particular type IgM (Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia), may cause unreliable results.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.
