Samples required

EDTA blood (purple cap/ yellow cap ring, 4 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Trough samples are preferred, either pre-dose, or in the morning after an evening dose (once daily dosing).

Reference range

A pre-dose target plasma itraconazole concentration of 0.5 mg/L or more has been suggested for effective antifungal prophylaxis in patients being treated for haematological malignancies.

Hydroxyitraconazole concentrations are normally higher than those of itraconazole.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes a target reporting time of 5 working days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results. Estimated total turnaround time 3 weeks.
