Ciclosporin

Alternative names, keywords

Cyclosporin, cyclosporine.

Samples required

EDTA blood (purple cap/ yellow cap ring, 4 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Trough sample required.

Test indications

Ciclosporin monitoring where required.

Factors affecting test performance/ results

Samples should not be taken from patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (i.e. > 5 mg/day) until at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration.

In rare cases, interference due to extremely high titres of antibodies to analyte-specific antibodies, streptavidin or ruthenium can occur.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.

Reference range

Therapeutic range depends on many factors including clinical picture, individual sensitivity to therapeutic and toxic effects, co-administration of other immunosuppressants, type of transplant and time post-transplant (where applicable).

Changes to treatment regimes should not be based solely on individual ciclosporin results.

Turnaround time

Run twice a week, usually on Tuesdays and Fridays.
