Samples required

2 x lithium heparin blood (green cap, 6 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Special arrangements required to allow fresh sample to be sent to external laboratory - if in doubt please contact laboratory before taking sample (RSCH ext. 63640, PRH ext. 68204).

Samples can be taken on some Wednesday mornings in RSCH OPD by appointment (ext. 64754), over 16's only. Under 16’s samples are taken at the Children’s Hospital. At PRH, blood samples also can be taken on the mornings of Monday or Tuesday in the blood-taking suite, or by appointment if necessary (ext. 68321).

Note that direct GP requests are not accepted, as required by PCT – please put name and address of requesting consultant.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 6 to 7 weeks* (can vary with workload) for routine cytogenetics, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
