Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Test indications

First line test for ?Wilson’s disease especially in patients with unexplained liver and/or neurological disease.

Adult 0.2 - 0.6 g/L
< 4 months 0.15 - 0.56 g/L
4 months to 3 years 0.26 - 0.90 g/L
4 to 12 years 0.25 - 0.46 g/L
13 to 19 years males 0.15 - 0.37 g/L, females 0.22 - 0.60 g/L

Low values of caeruloplasmin may be seen in Wilson disease but also in malnutrition, malabsorption, coeliac disease and nephrotic syndrome. For diagnosis of Wilson disease, please refer to EASL Guidelines.

Caeruloplasmin and copper deficiency may be masked in inflammation/infection, pregnancy and exogenous hormone use.
