Ascitic fluid (biochemistry)

Alternative names, keywords

Ascitic fluid protein, glucose, albumin, serum ascites albumin gradient, SAAG.

Samples required

Plain ascitic fluid (gold cap, 5 mL tube) for protein and/or albumin,

Fluoride oxalate-preserved ascitic fluid (grey cap, 2 mL tube) for glucose.

Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

For safe and efficient handling, samples must be received in Vacuette® evacuated sample tubes.

Test indications

Investigating cause of ascites.

Test information

Please note these tests are not currently UKAS accredited.

Serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) = albumin serum − albumin ascites

Factors affecting test performance/ results

See serum albumin, serum protein and plasma glucose for method-specific information on potential interferences. Note that the tests have not been validated for use in ascitic fluids.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.
