Samples required

Fluoride/oxalate blood (grey cap tube). Fill tube to brim. Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

If medicolegal contact laboratory (RSCH ext. 64137) first.

Factors affecting test performance/ results

In very rare cases, gammopathy, in particular type IgM (Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia), may cause unreliable results.

Results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient’s medical history, clinical examination and other findings.

Not applicable.

500 ‑ 1000 mg/L: flushing, slowing of reflexes, impaired visual acuity
> 1000 mg/L: depression of CNS
> 4000 mg/L: fatalities reported
