Test indications

From 5.1.15 samples will only be analysed by the referral laboratory if indicated by the clinical details.

Urine amino acid analysis is not recommended as a first line investigation for suspected inherited metabolic disease. Valid indications include:

• Investigation of primary renal tubular disease including cystinuria, lysinuric protein intolerance, Hartnup disease.
• Investigation of renal tubular dysfunction secondary to another inherited metabolic disorder (IMD) including mitochondrial disease.
• Suspected sulphite oxidase deficiency and molybdenum cofactor deficiency.
• Hypophosphatasia.

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 13 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
