Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Investigation of suspected alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

Adults: 0.9 - 2.0 g/L

Samples with an alpha-1 antitrypsin concentration of less than 1.2 g/L are routinely referred for alpha-1 antitrypsin phenotyping.

Note that alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency may be masked in inflammation/infection, pregnancy and exogenous hormone use.
