Samples required

24 hour urine collection in acidified container. Note that a single 24h collection is required; there is no need to do 3x 24h collections.

During urine collection patients should avoid vigorous exercise, excessive nicotine and coffee intake, chilli, curry leaves, supraphysiological doses of vitamin C. Download a printable list.

Test information

Increased physiological levels of metadrenalines can be seen with MAO inhibitors, tricyclic anti-depressants, levodopa, SNRIs, alpha-adrenergic receptor blockers, amphetamine, ephedrine, and with significant physical or emotional stress.

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of 10 days, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.
