Valganciclovir (prodrug form)

Samples required

Clotted blood (gold cap, 5 mL tube). Smaller tubes are available for paediatric samples.

Pre dose sample and post dose sample recommended (post dose = 1h after the end of iv administration or 2h after oral administration).

Test indications

May be of value in patients with renal failure and to monitor oral absorption, particularly in patients receiving valganciclovir (prodrug form of aciclovir).

Reference range

Pre dose 0.5 - 1.0 mg/L

Post dose 7 - 9 mg/L (ganciclovir)

Post dose 5 - 7 mg/L (valganciclovir)

Turnaround time

Referral lab quotes turnaround time of less than 3 working days*, however additional time must be allowed for packing, dispatch and delivery of sample, and return and processing of results.

*samples are analysed on day of receipt if before 3pm, Monday to Friday.
